My brother was probably the best person I will ever know in my life, and I routinely remind myself to be a little more like him: happy, optimistic, full of life.

FWIW, my mom, who headed up the investigation with the sister of the wrongly accused sailor, discovered that the cause of the premature ignition was the unauthorized use of powder bags that dated back to WWII. The powder, surviving sailors from other turrets reported, had turned green was prone to start smoking spontaneously. They were terrified of it. It was earmarked for destruction and had allegedly been procured off the books for use on the IOWA.

Also? It was only 19 years ago. I'm not *that* old. Sheesh. :eyeroll:Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31409757.post-43788570055482039512008-04-22T14:03:00.000-04:002008-04-22T14:03:00.000-04:00how sad.WAHN!Thanks for sharing.how sad.

WAHN!

Thanks for sharing.Mary Stebbins Taitthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10626507461216769140noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31409757.post-53373533698913993252008-04-22T12:56:00.000-04:002008-04-22T12:56:00.000-04:00That is outstanding. It is great that you take the time and effort to remember your fellow servicemen - and it is indeed a tragedy that their families had to go through all of that nonsense.Southern (in)Sanityhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08161448234899521650noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31409757.post-87506263938552525532008-04-22T07:56:00.000-04:002008-04-22T07:56:00.000-04:001969-which ship? They, unlike every average Joe, are exposed to the volatility of the war technology on a daily basis. It is a wonder more accidents have not occurred.Old Ladyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06333172930957879928noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31409757.post-31367503795010712592008-04-20T20:35:00.000-04:002008-04-20T20:35:00.000-04:00never forgetnever forget"that girl"https://www.blogger.com/profile/05578779148756650540noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31409757.post-42459098100332592902008-04-19T21:29:00.000-04:002008-04-19T21:29:00.000-04:00Thank you for recalling this tragedy that we might...Thank you for recalling this tragedy that we might remember those who died serving their country.e.Craig Crawfordhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04645546681555860747noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31409757.post-67180735993394646312008-04-19T12:26:00.000-04:002008-04-19T12:26:00.000-04:00You are very right that these men deserve to be re...You are very right that these men deserve to be remembered, and we cannot honor what we do not know.
