Why I Quit Going To The Gym

I was working out in the gym when I spotted a lovely sweet young thing.  Yes! I can notice a sweet young things…that’s why God gave us eyes.

Anyhoney, I asked the trainer that was nearby, "What machine in here should I use to impress that sweet thing over there?”

The trainer looked me up and down and said "I would try the ATM in the lobby."

I hate those fucking trainers.

Memorial Day 2011

***NOTE***
Peeps!  Thank you all for your thanks for my service, but dudes, I'm not dead yet.

This day is for the ones who have gone on to Eternal Duty guarding the streets of gold, protecting the skies of blue and the calm, balmy seas.  Silently thank them for their sacrifices.

***That’s All! Carry On!***

The Blue Against The Gray - A Poem

My high school and Face Book friend, Patricia McCollough Walston, a journalist and author, is posting a series of poems in examiner.com this weekend.   One was from the Revolutionary War and this one from the Civil War.  I really like this and since I am a Civil War buff, and thought I would pass it along to you, my peeps.

Civil War Poem:  The Blue and The Gray
Francis Miles Finch (1827-1907)

By the flow of the inland river,
  • Whence the fleets of iron have fled,
  • Where the blades of the grave-grass quiver,
  • Asleep are the ranks of the dead:
  • Under the sod and the dew,
  • Waiting the judgment-day;
  • Under the one, the Blue,
  • Under the other, the Gray
  • These in the robings of glory,
  • Those in the gloom of defeat,
  • All with the battle-blood gory,
  • In the dusk of eternity meet:
  • Under the sod and the dew,
  • Waiting the judgement-day
  • Under the laurel, the Blue,
  • Under the willow, the Gray.
  • From the silence of sorrowful hours
  • The desolate mourners go,
  • Lovingly laden with flowers
  • Alike for the friend and the foe;
  • Under the sod and the dew,
  • Waiting the judgement-day;
  • Under the roses, the Blue,
  • Under the lilies, the Gray.
  • So with an equal splendor,
  • The morning sun-rays fall,
  • With a touch impartially tender,
  • On the blossoms blooming for all:
  • Under the sod and the dew,
  • Waiting the judgment-day;
  • Broidered with gold, the Blue,
  • Mellowed with gold, the Gray.
  • So, when the summer calleth,
  • On forest and field of grain,
  • With an equal murmur falleth
  • The cooling drip of the rain:
  • Under the sod and the dew,
  • Waiting the judgment -day,
  • Wet with the rain, the Blue
  • Wet with the rain, the Gray.
  • Sadly, but not with upbraiding,
  • The generous deed was done,
  • In the storm of the years that are fading
  • No braver battle was won:
  • Under the sod adn the dew,
  • Waiting the judgment-day;
  • Under the blossoms, the Blue,
  • Under the garlands, the Gray
  • No more shall the war cry sever,
  • Or the winding rivers be red;
  • They banish our anger forever
  • When they laurel the graves of our dead!
  • Under the sod and the dew,
  • Waiting the judgment-day,
  • Love and tears for the Blue,
  • Tears and love for the Gray.
Remember what the 30 of May is all about while you are having fun at the lake or in the backyard bar-b-quing.  The fallen deserve a moment of quiet, an offer of thanks for all they did, and a feeling of respect for their sacrifice.

A Memorial Day Poem From A Vet

This is the Memorial Day weekend as you all know.

Below is a poem a veteran who works with my daughter, Marni, wrote for the occasion.

Jewels of Freedom

Hear the echoes of history and time
Footfalls of soldiers marching in line

Where did they go, what did they say
Are you listening, do you care anyway

We shared a coke float at the local drugstore
He left on a bus to return no more

It was boot camp, training night and day
Then on to battle so far away

Pendleton, Polk, Benning and Dix
Many came, trained and humped across the sticks

What did you say, you heard a voice
From one long ago who had no choice

Its honor and pride, personal you see
That drives men and women who serve to be free

Why was it you and you and you
And not me, not me, not me too

When I turned you were gone from the drugstore stool
Only yesterday we were in high school

No Democrat, Republican, red or blue
Black, white, red, Muslim, Christian, Jew

Don’t ask, don’t tell, bullets fly
They know nothing and don’t ask why

Patriots, patriots strong and sure
Fear ever present but courage is pure

Why you and you and you
And not me, not me, not me too

I really can’t hear their faint cry
You see we are really busy you and I

Why should we bother on this Memorial Day
Oh your sister’s in Iraq did I hear you say

Have a hotdog and an ice cold beer
Not to be troubled with thoughts so dear

It’s hot baseball on a sunny day
Early celebrated on the 30th of May

Soldiers, sailors, airmen and crew
Marching and singing as they parade through

Did you ever wear a poppy to honor the dead
Most never heard of it, though it’s bright red

Why you and you and you
Not me, not me, not me too

Coral Sea to Corregidor
Normandy’s beaches, they are no more

From the central highlands of Vietnam
Battles in Ia Drang, Hue and Khe Sanh

Puff the magic dragon unleashed his terrible roar
Yet a single ground to air missile has ended this chore

I hear their voices soft and sweet
From Desert Storm and Iraq they meet

They rolled across the desert in M1 tanks
Pause, reflect and give thanks

From the mountains and passes of Afghanistan
Ghostly figures raise their hands

Remember, remember the sacrifice and call
Don’t neglect and forget those who gave all

Why you and you and you
Not me, not me, not me too

What do I owe, the tab is great
The price of freedom will never abate

Freedom to succeed and freedom to fail
Petty politicians bark and wail

Peace they cry, why should we fight
There’s nothing to be gained by the use of might

Like gems that sparkle and diamonds that glow
Jewels of freedom are valuable you know

Wear them in remembrance of those precious and dear
Whose shining faces in the mist appear

Not for money, fortune, glory or fame
But for honor, country, family and name

How valuable are those gone before
Priceless I say, from freedom’s shore

A soldier’s tomb is oft a melancholy place
Where emotions and loved ones intersect and embrace

History and time march on to the drum
Do you know a soldier, have you lost someone

As you listen, listen the notes are clear
Trumpets playing taps in a cemetery near

Turn your head, give a nod and look their way
Recall their sacrifice this Memorial Day.

ELMO GEEKS AT THE BEACH

This is the Elmo Geek Family.

It was Friday in Panama City Beach which is also the day for wearing of the red.  Judy and I wear red every Friday to show support for our men and women in the service of our country.

I had on my red Navy association shirt and Judy and Bug had matching Elmo shirts. (aaahhhhh)  But Mater didn’t have a red shirt (not a very cool color for a 15 year old) so we stopped off at Wal Mart to find him one.  The only red shirt he liked or that would fit was the Elmo shirt, so that was that.  So…after he chose his shirt, all three looked at me. “Not on your life.” said I. “No way, no how, not today.”

After we paid for the two shits, Mater and I changed at the car.  Then we headed for home.  We stopped in Dothan, AL, for lunch and a gracious lady took the picture above with my cell phone.  Geeky huh?

Here is Mater and Bug on the balcony of the motel and a view of the beach below.  The weather was perfect, slight breeze and very warm.  But the waves…they were vicious.  I got hit in the back with one and was knocked to my knees.

Pissed me off!  I got up, turned into the waves and yelled, “Come on, give me your best shot.”  When a big one came in I would knock the shit out of it with a one-two swing of the fist.  I got the best of the waves for about 10 minutes, but had to back off because I got winded.  The waves have no wind to worry about and just kept coming.  I guess the Gulf won after all.

Anyvacation, we are back home now, sore but happy.  I hope y’all had a good week, and that you are praying for those in the mid-west.  Those dudes are betting beat up pretty bad.  At least send good vibes, if prayer isn’t part of your lifestyle.
